A lot has happened in the last eleven years. I thought I’d share some highlights and not so highlights the best I can recount them…

Highlight: Our first apartment was a cozy little one bedroom where I sold Madie on the idea of getting this ‘high speed internet’ thing by showing her the wonders of online shopping.

Not so highlight: We left our first apartment because of a centipede (well, more likely a silverfish) infestation. Disgusting. Also, I think our first fight ever was in that apartment while we were putting dishes in the cupboard. I thought they were going in up-side-down… Madie didn’t agree. Now we wouldn’t fight about something like that – Madie would just break all glasses into pieces and throw them into the shower without me knowing about it.

Highlight: Our first long car trip across country was to the east coast to visit Madie’s family. Before the days of GPS, we navigated our way to Delaware without getting lost.

Not so highlight: In Pennsylvania, our beloved little Volvo wagon broke down on us twice. Within the same day we were towed two times and ended up with a rental car. On my way back to Pennsylvania in the rental car (which Madie insisted I do alone) I heard the song ‘1000 miles’ by Vanessa Carlton a 1000 times during what felt like a 1000 mile trip. I cannot hear that song without being mentally transported back to the mountains in that little red Ford. Also, we got terribly lost on the way home.

Highlight: We booked our first (and only) bed and breakfast stay.

Not so highlight: If you were sitting in our room, and the guests staying down the hallway dropped a feather on a down comforter that was sitting on a pillow, you could hear it. Honestly, it’s like the walls were the very opposite of sound proof. Add to that the room was full of bugs, moths, spiders, beetles… We left the night we arrived.

Highlight: Camping in Itasca state park. Beautiful, affordable, hundreds of miles from home. Smores were just a camp fire away!

Not so highlight: It stormed all but one night of our five night stay. I learned how little I know about starting camp fires. Smores are better cold anyway.

Highlight: For anniversary I told Madie that we’re going to Milwaukee and we are going to stay in the most beautiful hotel I’ve ever seen in my life (I once stopped in to find a pay phone years earlier while a buddy of mine and I were traveling to a concert). Nightly rates were surprisingly affordable when I booked the room.

Not so highlight: Upon arriving in Milwaukee we found out I remembered the name incorrectly and are actually staying just across the street at a hotel that was most definitely NOT the most beautiful hotel I’d ever seen. The window in our room look out directly across the street at the hotel I thought we were staying at.

I guess it shows things do not need to go perfect to feel perfect. I’m a lucky man to have such a wonderful girl as my wife. There is no question which years have been the best of my life, and it’s all thanks to Madie, who I love so so much.
